Art Auctioneer Enjoys Working with Park West

The Art Auctioneers maintaining the Park West Galleries on cruise ships around the world lead extraordinary lives. While they do work hard running Park West’s Cruise Art Auctions, they also get to explore all of the exotic locations they find themselves in – all while meeting some fantastic people along the way.

We hope you enjoy getting a glimpse into their activities as much as we do. We also love hearing about your experiences with Park West at sea, so please feel free to share them with us.
__________________________

"Without question one of the best career decisions I ever made was to work with Park West as an Art Auctioneer. I am an American and I was raised in Mission Viejo, California. When I was young I never got to travel further than Arizona. Everyone dreams of having that great jet-setting job traveling the world earning tons of money. When I finally decided to become an Art Auctioneer on a cruise ship I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was scared because I knew very little about art; actually all I knew for sure was that this job was like nothing else I had ever encountered.

The training shore side was intense, and the first four months on the job was a blur. As an Associate Art Auctioneer it was all about hard work and dedication, and you are constantly learning new things. Everything you do is preparation for the final phase: to become a Principal Art Auctioneer on your own cruise ship.

Needless to say at some point pretty early on in the job I found myself typing away on Facebook on a Tuesday during a day off in port. One of my old friends was chatting with me while on a break in their cubicle at their 9-5 job. They asked me where I was, what I was doing, and what this new job was that I had gotten myself into. I told them that I was on Cozumel Island in Mexico at a beach resort. I was lounging by a pool drinking cheap Coronas at No Name Bar (trust me, you will love it when you get there) after spending the morning SCUBA diving on some of the world’s best reefs. My new girlfriend from Sweden was sitting next to me and she was chatting with other shipboard friends from England and South Africa and Romania and Thailand. I was an art auctioneer / art dealer representing the world’s largest art dealer and I live and work on cruise ships all over the world.

My friend of course quickly replied “lol – what are you really doing.” I think it was at that point that it hit me. I had found that dream job.

Working with Park West takes a lot of determination, hard work, creativity, people skills and a can do attitude. There are plenty of easy and fun days when the ship is in port and plenty of long hard days when the ship is at sea. The work is hard but the rewards are huge. This is not a 9-5 office job – you wake up in a new country every morning. You live for free on a luxury cruise line and have friends from all over the world. You have the opportunity and privilege to work with world class original artwork from some of the world’s greatest living artists and even some of art history’s greatest masters. The first time you ever pick up a 300+ year old Rembrandt your heart races; then it races even more when it sells to an excited client. You work with fun and happy guests who are on vacation and you can educate them and enrich their lives. You are part of a very strong team made up of top of their game outgoing go-getters who are wonderful to work with and call your friends.

Working with Park West is the best move I have ever made in my life, and I cannot wait to see what the next 5 years have in store for me, because somehow it just keeps getting better."

Exhibit Features Matisse and Rodin

Henri Matisse is an artist of classical greatness and one of the strongest influences on the art of the 20th century. The Park West Gallery Collection is one of the world's finest, showcasing fine art by masters including Henri Matisse. Browse the Park West Gallery - Matisse Collection >>
___________________________________

Henri Matisse. Nu bleu IV, 1952. © succession H. Matisse - Photo : Ville de Nice - Service PhotographiquePARIS -- The Rodin Museum is staging a face-to-face encounter between two outstanding creative artists who were only a generation apart, Henri Matisse and Auguste Rodin. Rodin was the dominant figure in the sculpture of the period while Matisse, Rodin's contemporary for the first seventeen years of the 20th century, introduced revolutionary changes in its painting. The story of the encounters and relations between these two major artists is one that has remained unexplored until now.

When the two artists met for the first time, in 1899, Matisse was thirty years old and Rodin sixty. Matisse & Rodin will put forward some fresh thinking on what Matisse, the master of Fauvism, made of Rodin, on what his works can tell us about the affinities, correspondences or differences between the two artists.

On show to the public will be a wide-ranging selection of Matisse's sculpture, an aspect of his work to which no specific exhibition has been devoted since 1975. By selecting certain specific works and using a thematic approach, Matisse & Rodin sets out to show both points of convergence and divergence in the sculptural and graphic work of the two masters. It aims to explore Matisse's sculpture and drawings and, from the perspective of Matisse's art, to see Rodin in a new light.

Matisse & Rodin is now on view through February 28, 2010.

Paris Boutiques. Fanch Ledan.Just want to drop you a quick note updating you on the two take-off Fanch pieces we purchased on last week’s cruise. We found a great cab driver at the port who took us to the main FedEx facility in downtown Miami.

It was a good thing we got rid of the art anyway as it took two days to get home from Miami, including spending a night in Atlanta. The art arrived today in excellent condition which was a relief. We eagerly await the receipt of the two other pieces that are coming from the warehouse.

On a personal note, I want to thank you for all the time you spent with us over the course of the cruise. Your enthusiasm, knowledge and expertise were very much appreciated. It was also a pleasure to get to know you on a more personal level. By the end of the cruise I felt as though I was speaking with a friend as well as a very intelligent and trusted art auctioneer. Both Terri and I wish you much success and the best of luck. If I can ever act as a reference for you it would be my please to do so.

If you do ever make it to Minnesota, please be certain to get in touch with me. We would be happy to have you as a guest, and I would enjoy checking out the Cirrus facility myself.

Sincerely,

Cruising with Park West Artist Tim Yanke

Here at Park West Gallery we strive to give our collectors unique, hands-on art experiences. This includes bringing collectors together with Park West artists.

Artist Tim Yanke is a favorite of many Park West collectors, and often times once they meet him, they understand and appreciate his artwork even more.

Hi Tim,

We hope this note finds you well. Last week we able to pick up the piece you painted for us from the Park West Gallery VIP Cruise on the Freedom of the Seas we sailed on together in March.

We had to let you know how pleased we are with the work. We couldn’t have asked for better if we were standing over your shoulder. You caught everything that was meaningful, and the title was most apropos. We are still trying to decipher some of the numbers and letters. That’s what makes the piece unique, fun, and interesting.

Our Road. Tim Yanke.
It is hanging just above the TV so it is always in our line of vision. Again, thanks for the great work. We hope we get the chance to cross paths with you again. We enjoyed sailing with you and having a few drinks together. Should you ever be in the Tampa area, please do not hesitate to look us up.

Your friends,

Mike & Janette W.

Exhibit: Chagall and the Mediterranean

Marc Chagall, known as the "poet-painter" of the 20th century, lived to be embraced as one of the most influential artists of all time. Started in the 1960s, the Park West Gallery collection is one of the world’s finest, with artwork by masters of art history, including Marc Chagall.

Hello Park West Gallery,

My fiancée and I along with my parents recently went to 3 Park West auctions held on board the Carnival Glory during a 7 day cruise of the Caribbean. I had been to a Park West auction on a cruise last year but did not intend on bidding. This time around, I was determined to attend and bid and buy.

I want to congratulate Park West for having such a wonderful collection of art as well as such wonderful staff. The Park West staff on the Glory was extremely knowledgeable, personable and informative.

Central Park Bridge - Winter. Alexander Chen.
The auctioneer, Martin, was a joy to work with and provided information about every piece on the block. Martin's assistants, Roxanna (his fiancée) and Cornelia were equally knowledgeable and pleasant. But it was Martin's special flair that helped me to enjoy the auctions so much more. "I'm just sayin!" That was Martin's trademark saying during the auctions. "Trust me!"

Because of Martin, my fiancée and I purchased an Alexander Chen, 3 Emile Bellet pieces, and we collected a few free pieces (Krasnyansky) thanks to raffles. My parents purchased a Thomas Kinkade, a Scott Jacobs piece, a set by Schaefer & Miles and a Max! Yes a Peter Max. I am so jealous of them. And it's all because of Martin.

Thanks again Martin, Roxanna, Cornelia and Park West.

Exhibit: Miro of Majorca

Joan Miró is viewed by the art world and collectors, as one of the most important artist of the 20th century and the precursor for much of Modern Art. Since 1969, Park West Gallery has been a reliable resource for the artwork of Modern Masters, including Joan Miró. Park West Gallery Artist Biographies: Joan Miró >>
___________________________________

Pilar i Joan Miró a Mallorca Foundation
THESSALONIKI, GREECE -- The Teloglion Foundation and the Foundation Pilar i Joan MirÏŒ of Majorca present one of the artist’s greatest exhibitions in Greece, MirÏŒ of Majorca. The exhibit includes a significant number of Joan MirÏŒ’s works and documents (over 400) of all themes including: painting, sculpture, etching, drawings, sketches for sculptures or public art, for sobreteixisms, for ballet, for music, material for King Ubu of Jarry (of special importance to MirÏŒ). The scale model of the Sert workshop - along with documents, notes, furniture, objects, etc. - convey the atmosphere, the internal aspect of his way of thinking.

The works date back to 1908 (his only salvaged early landscape painting) until his death in 1983. However, the exhibition mainly presents mature MirÏŒ in Majorca and the works he created in the workshop designed by his architect friend Josep Lluis Sert in 1956. This workshop is a landmark in MirÏŒ’s work, because it is in this workshop that he reviewed his up to then course and decided to make a new beginning.

This is about a period of endless independence and search. Having drawn experience in America, and being acquainted with the painters of the ‘Action painting’, he now lives within the atmosphere of European ‘Αrt Informel’. He is influenced by the prehistoric caverns’ painting, the art of the Far East, the Catalan folk tradition, his country’s own tradition, and the twelve-note music. His eagerness to enter new fields is evident in his own artistic technique - stains, spatters, streams, graphics, tinctures, cracks, sutures, nails, ropes, use of random elements, of violent gestures, persistent deepening in the expressiveness of materials. His themes include bioform surreal symbol figures, the woman, the birds, landscapes, the realm of the sky, the sun, the moon, the constellations.

Mirό of Majorca is currently on view through February 5, 2010.

A Day at the Salon with Sue #7. Itzchak Tarkay.Thank you for inviting us to another Park West VIP event. It’s always a joy spending time and being part of the Park West family. We had a wonderful and enjoyable time throughout the entire trip.

The high level of creative energy among the Park West staff, as well as their personal pride in what they do, is always obvious and very gratifying.

In addition to the Alaskan cruise experience, the beautiful scenery, and all the delicious dinners, the Park West cocktail parties and auctions were excellent and so much fun. As always, they are intellectually stimulating allowing one to embrace aspects of economic, social and political history, and philosophy in addition to the consideration of many view points and theories. Many of the presented works of art by Park West, whether modern or classical, show me immense depth, variety, complexity and ingenuity.

Once again, thank you and take care.

Park West Artwork to Remember Our Cruises…

Dear Park West Gallery:

My name is Carol and in May 2009 my sister Donna and I cruised on Royal Caribbean's Monarch of the Seas to the Bahamas. This was my 1st cruise, and my sister’s 3rd cruise. I had never been to an art auction before, but I am an art enthusiast. My sister also had never attended an art auction and only went because I wanted to go.

Shimmering by Igor Medvedev.I had visited the gallery on the ship and spoke with Yevgeny about the serigraph on canvas by Igor Medvedev titled Shimmering; I fell in love with it. Yevgeny signed me up for the auction. The auction information and my number were delivered to my cabin along with a Park West catalogue of the some of the artist’s works.

I did purchase Shimmering as well as a Krasnyansky and an Erte bronze medallion. My sister purchased a Krasnyansky and two Erte bronze medallions. The art all arrived safely and beautifully framed.

My sister, her husband, and 3 other couples are booked for a Mediterranean cruise in October 2010. My sister has caught the art bug and intends on purchasing a Fanch Ledan work of art on the cruise; it is one we saw on the Monarch of the Seas. This will be our way of remembering each cruise. She was also looking forward to finding a Medvedev - his landscapes are beautiful. We especially liked the way he does light and shadows.

In closing Derek and Yevgeny were very helpful and informative. The auction was a lot of fun. We are both extremely pleased with our art.

Sincerely,

Carol R.

It was a wonderful cruise…

Below is a letter to Park West Gallery Director Morris Shapiro. The recent VIP Alaskan cruise was a big hit with the Park West collectors onboard. The Art Auctioneers were great, artists were onboard, and the Park West Gallery Art Collection was well received by all. Please let us know about your experiences with Park West at sea.
___________________________________________

Dear Morris & Staff,

Divine Comedy. Purgatory 31. Salvador Dali.We would like to say thank you to you and the staff that welcomed us to the Alaska cruise. You could not have been more cordial. It was a wonderful cruise enhanced by your staff’s direct involvement. We hope you will pass on our appreciation. They were so much a part of making our cruise memorable.

It also was a real education for the differences in a cruise auction and the VIP auctions. We were fascinated to see all the Master works you showed us and hope, in the future, to be in a position to get the Destino or Dali trilogy. As of yet we have not received our Krasnyansky, but we are sure it is on the way.

With the hope that Park West will think of us again in some future endeavor, we remain thankful for this experience. With a special thanks to you, we hope we will see you again soon.

Good thoughts,

Jane & Thom H.
