Cruise Art Auctioneers have Tough yet Amazing Job

The Art Auctioneers maintaining the Park West Galleries on cruise ships around the world lead extraordinary lives. While they do work hard running Park West’s Cruise Art Auctions, they also get to explore all of the exotic locations they find themselves in – all while meeting some fantastic people along the way.

We hope you enjoy getting a glimpse into their activities as much as we do. We also love hearing about your experiences with
Park West at sea, so please feel free to share them with us.

"Since I have joined the Park West Gallery team, I have had some truly amazing experiences. I have sipped espresso in Venice, shopped the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, dove in some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world, and met and worked with some truly fantastic people.

Abandoned Fishing Boat. Anatoly Metlan. These are some of the perks, now here is what it took to get there. I was challenged like I had never have been challenged before. The eighteen hour days, the hours of studying, the fear of not being chosen, yes, the training was tough, but when I finally took my first ship and banged the hammer on my first sold work, I knew I had found a home.

Yes, we work hard, yes, it’s probably the toughest job you will ever have, but how many jobs can you be in Venice one day and Athens the next? I can’t think of anything else I would rather be doing!"

Ciel Orageux. Jean-Claude Picot. Thanks very much for the weekend; we had a very good time. I truly enjoy working with Park West as we always come away with a better understanding and knowledge of art after an auction and the time spent with your representatives.

As a result of this auction, my wife and I have agreed to study up on Picasso's work and add one of his works to our collection.

Thanks again we look forward to working with you in the future,

Umbrella Man on Blends. Peter Max.I would like to compliment two of your employees on the Carnival Ship Glory. The employees are Martin and Roxanna!

You could not have two employees more passionate about art and the desire for everyone to appreciate it and also for everyone to buy art.

We found Martin's seminar on art very interesting and informative. We (my wife and I) learned so many new things about art. I bought several pieces from the artist Peter Max and I am looking forward to displaying them in our home.

I attended an art show in Jacksonville, Florida on Dec 11th - 13th. The staff was very friendly and helpful. One of your employees Abigail helped me make some choices and if it were not for her friendly and professional attitude I may not have purchased the artwork. I just wanted to say thank you and I will be doing more business with your company in the near future. I should hope you recognize your employee Abigail's stellar performance and thanks again for making my purchase a pleasant one.

Park West Auctions Are Fascinating Experiences

La Femme Adonia. Csaba Markus.Apart from some passing interest in art due to a famous, long past relative (a bloke called James McNeill Whistler), my wife and I had never really been exposed to the art world until this cruise. What an eye-opener!

It was a fascinating experience, made even more so by the assistance - and knowledge - of Daniel who willingly introduced to the likes of Dali, Chagall, Rembrandt, Tarkay, Max and so on. We're still struggling with the differences in embellished artworks, seriolithographs and so on but it's a learning process that we have embraced with fervour.

His enthusiasm was such that we purchased about nine artworks during our cruise (and have probably set our mortgage back 15 years!). Sadly, we could not afford any originals but should we suddenly receive a financial windfall, Park West will be our first port of call - and Peter Max our first choice.

Thank you so much...

VIP Collectors Appreciate Latest Park West Event

We strive to make all of your experiences with Park West at sea enriching and enjoyable. In addition to experiencing the Park West Gallery Art Collection and the Park West artists, it is our hope that you will also meet wonderful new friends along the way. Please keep sharing your latest Park West stories with us.

Snap, Crackle, Pop. Leslie Lew.I want to say thank you for the wonderful VIP cruise on Rhapsody of Seas. It was great to meet both Hua Chen and Leslie Lew. It was even better to see Leslie at work and purchase art from both artists.

I want to thank Morris and Donna especially. Their insights help us create a ‘home’ with many meaningful and beautiful art pieces. Donna has continued to guide us in our collection and is always thinking of what we like and might want to purchase. You must have Morris with you to get appropriate and accurate art history.

I think we started our art collection with a Max “Heart in Flag” over or about 20 years ago. I feel and totally am proud of our collection of Dali, Rembrandt, Agam, Max, Rut, Pangborn, Le Kinff, Tarkay, Lew, Chen, and others. We have and enjoy our contemporary art as well as ‘master’ artists.

Thanks again to Morris, Donna, Tom, Jin, Sebelle, and Kathryn as well as your workers behind the scenes. We really look forward to another VIP event – I can’t tell you how privileged I feel to be blessed with your friendship, advice, and works of art.

Thanks also to Albert for his dedication to Park West and his great dealings for others.

Patriotic Series: Full Liberty with Flag. Peter Max.We are writing to recognize a few of your Park West employees. We were on the Transatlantic Cruise Carnival Dream on October 27, 2009 and attended all nine events plus the extra activities.

Chris, Amy, Bill and Yuki made a great team. They were very personable and professional.

This team was very knowledgeable about the art and artists. For novices, like us, they made each event enjoyable and informative. Amy especially made us feel welcome and was a terrific auctioneer.

We cannot say enough positive things about these people. In fact, having cruised five times, Chris, Amy, Bill and Yuki have been the best presenters from Park West!

Sincerely,

Statue of Liberty Ver. II #15. Peter Max.We were on the VIP cruise last week and had an absolute ball. We have grown up over the years with Park West having met our first Park West Auctioneer whose name just happened to be Morris Shapiro. When we look back at our art we have bought almost all of our major pieces from you even though we are frequent Princess Cruisers.

I can only say that the treatment from Jen and her group was fantastic from the night in New York until our exit of the bus at LaGuardia. The hospitality was overwhelming.

As for the artwork made available to us it was like putting children in a candy store. We have never seen such numbers of masters displayed with so many choices and needless to say made us buy more than we had anticipated. Travis was fantastic. His lecturing skill could make the most boring subjects into exciting moments.

Bottom line we enjoyed ourselves immensely including meeting Fanch Ledan and his wife, Victor and Linda and her husband. We were lucky enough to sit at dinner with the Ledans and the Kniffs and enjoyed talking with them regarding everything from art to our respective children.

Again we want to thank you for the invitation and especially thank, Jen, Travis, Tim, Justin, and Ann Marie for an exciting and enjoyable week of art and travel.

Simon (Art Auctioneer),

We just wanted to drop you this quick note to say how thoroughly pleased we were with the VIP event at Boca Raton Resort and Beach Club. Everything was so well coordinated and you and all the other Park West staff were so helpful, we really appreciate all of the effort that each of you put into the event. We thank you for your help and advice in selection. Your knowledge of art work and price points is helpful. We were able to speak at length with Meghan at dinner and really enjoyed her; she will be a great asset to Park West.

Tiffany, EJ and Sam were also very helpful. Chris Lindsay is now our favorite auctioneer ever, (and we've had a few) so we hope to see him again. We appreciated the humor and educational information that each of you brought to the auctions. Great job to a great team!

Citando al Toro a Banderillas Sentado en una Silla. From La Tauromaquia. Pablo Picasso.
The amount of time allotted for viewing/auction, free time, and evening events was perfect. And it goes without saying that the Boca Raton Resort was first class.

We have collected numerous pieces by Dali over the years, many from Park West and are always looking to expand that collection so we were of course disappointed in our unsuccessful bid and also at how few were available. The consolation is that our piece by Leslie Lew will have special significance since we met her and so enjoyed her. And then there is...............Marco,what can you say about Marco - he is so much fun! We so enjoyed meeting and spending time with him.

Thank you so much Simon for including us in this program, we hope to see you at another event in the future.

Happy Park West Collectors for 35 Years…

We love to hear about all of the exception service Park West customers receive from the Art Auctioneers during their cruise art auctions!

Park West Galleries can be found on a variety of cruise ships, and they offer passengers a unique opportunity to view and collect artworks from a multitude of artists. Next time you find yourself cruising, check out the Park West Gallery Collection of artwork onboard.

Hi Travis (Cruise Art Auctioneer),

Waiting for an Angel. Marko Mavrovich. We were delighted to be with you and the rest of the Park West staff from Sept. 30 to Oct. 10th. We had a great time...bought too much art...love each piece...as we only buy the pieces that speak to our hearts and move our souls, but where will we hang it all? Don't worry...where there is a will, and room to hang up one more tier..there is a way! Once home I was immersed in the Charity Tennis Tournament I run the Silent Auction for, thus my delay in writing to thank you for making the trip so very special!

We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of yet 12 more pieces to add to our collection that we started with Park West Gallery 35 years ago in Memphis, Tennessee when Albert Scaglione was the auctioneer, outstanding educator, check out person and even helped load our car! In all that time I don't think we've had a better educational session as thorough, concise and enjoyable as you presented in your "History of Printmaking.” We also enjoyed your presentation by the delightful lady...I forget her name ...on 30,000 years of art in 30 min which we later learned was your work.

Acadia Sunset. Marko Mavrovich. When we were onboard, you said you would be happy to send me your outline or "cheat sheet" of both presentations, or even better if you have the presentations on a disc...I would love to have them to help our son and new daughter in law get to know our art and have an appreciation and love of art as we do.

They are newly married, as were we when Albert took us into the world of collecting and lit the spark and passion we have enjoyed all these years. Patrick of course grew up with art everywhere, even had Chagall wallpaper and a Picasso print in his nursery...but has always taken it for granted. Perhaps now that he will soon be starting to consider their needs for a home and the potential for art on the walls, I would like to give him the opportunity to be more knowledgeable about the finer aspects of collecting. I can not think of a finer instructor/mentor than you!

I do hope you will be able to help us with this request...just think of the young fertile minds you will be leading into what we hope will become a life long passion for art! Again, we so enjoyed meeting you and the others...what a great team you make. Everything appeared seamless and as though you were hardly working, but rather having fun along with the rest of us! We know how much effort y'all put in and appreciate every ounce of it!

Take care and love that little baby and his Mama to pieces!

Fondly,

Nancy K.

Rhythm in the Tropics. Alfred Gockel.I am writing this to commend Assistant Art Auctioneer Mario. I have been on 17 cruises and purchased art on almost all of them. My dad and I were so impressed with him that I purchased another piece of art.

I watched him "work the room." He remembered potential buyers by name and also remembered which pieces they showed interest in. After a brief conversation, he approached me with exactly the piece I had in mind. His professionalism and recall was uncanny.

Mario demonstrates all the qualities of a good employee and a great auctioneer. He is a caring professional who puts people at ease. As you know, many individuals have never purchased art and are very leery. He handles them in such a way that they were not reluctant to make purchases.

To reiterate, congratulations to Park West for having such a stellar employee.

Sincerely,

Please forward my heartfelt thanks and great appreciation to the proper department concerning your associates in sales and auctions. I was able to meet and participate on the recent New York/New England (Sept 30-Oct 10) cruise group; but due to prior commitments could not go for 10 days.

I wanted to really commend the friendly and caring staff who made my daughter and I welcome. Tim, Sebelle, and Oscar seemed to be everywhere: smiling, engaging, answering questions, and keeping our group informed.

I Love the World. Peter Max.
For the number of participants, everything went so smoothly. We enjoyed our time with the pre-cruise group and were thrilled to meet Peter Max. We are planning another visit to New York soon; as our appetites have been awakened!

Again many thanks. I promised the group that I would go on the next outing. Seeing the great preparations have made me a true fan and believer!

I had a good time at the art auction last weekend, here in California. I wanted to let you and your staff know that we were well taken care of, you were very fun and funny and it made bidding of course very easy.(I think Park West figured that out long ago)

Quartet II. Anatole Krasnyansky.
The hotel was nice and my interactions with Sam, EJ, Ashley, the brothers and Simon, they were all very professional. Even the Mac and Cheese was fine.

I loved talking to the artists; I could have listened to Anatole for hours. I am looking forward to my next auction, I still have wall space.

Oh and thanks for the door prize.

Sincerely,

Mary W. & Cindy F.

Dear Tom (Cruise Art Auctioneer):

Dragonfly (fig. 20). Tim Yanke. We are overwhelmed with gratitude for the opportunity to experience a luxury cruise with you, Anne, Jen and Tim. The gathering for cocktails and dinner the first night was marvelous. Before we stepped on the ship we had met new friends with whom we could enjoy Park West’s generosity.

Your itinerary of cocktails, dinner and auctions was well planned and balanced. The selection of art was extensive and we appreciate the education we received about specific works including the masters.

While disappointed to not have the opportunity to meet Anatole Krasnyansky, the Park West staff and Tim Yanke exceeded our expectations with their knowledge and friendly hospitality.

Lone Star 62. Tim Yanke. The NCL Pearl provided pleasant accommodations and their staff was professional. We enjoyed every minute of the cruise.

We want to give a special thank you to Anne for acknowledging our 30th wedding anniversary. Our celebration was enhanced by the attention the Park West staff exhibited to us and to all who were a part of the VIP group.

Words cannot express our appreciation to Park West, Anne, Jen, Tim and you Tom for providing us with such a memorable experience. We continue to add to our art collection, including the masters, and we look forward to seeing all of you again in the future.

Sincerely,

Ken and Pam W.

"Without question one of the best career decisions I ever made was to work with Park West as an Art Auctioneer. I am an American and I was raised in Mission Viejo, California. When I was young I never got to travel further than Arizona. Everyone dreams of having that great jet-setting job traveling the world earning tons of money. When I finally decided to become an Art Auctioneer on a cruise ship I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was scared because I knew very little about art; actually all I knew for sure was that this job was like nothing else I had ever encountered.

The training shore side was intense, and the first four months on the job was a blur. As an Associate Art Auctioneer it was all about hard work and dedication, and you are constantly learning new things. Everything you do is preparation for the final phase: to become a Principal Art Auctioneer on your own cruise ship.

Needless to say at some point pretty early on in the job I found myself typing away on Facebook on a Tuesday during a day off in port. One of my old friends was chatting with me while on a break in their cubicle at their 9-5 job. They asked me where I was, what I was doing, and what this new job was that I had gotten myself into. I told them that I was on Cozumel Island in Mexico at a beach resort. I was lounging by a pool drinking cheap Coronas at No Name Bar (trust me, you will love it when you get there) after spending the morning SCUBA diving on some of the world’s best reefs. My new girlfriend from Sweden was sitting next to me and she was chatting with other shipboard friends from England and South Africa and Romania and Thailand. I was an art auctioneer / art dealer representing the world’s largest art dealer and I live and work on cruise ships all over the world.

My friend of course quickly replied “lol – what are you really doing.” I think it was at that point that it hit me. I had found that dream job.

Working with Park West takes a lot of determination, hard work, creativity, people skills and a can do attitude. There are plenty of easy and fun days when the ship is in port and plenty of long hard days when the ship is at sea. The work is hard but the rewards are huge. This is not a 9-5 office job – you wake up in a new country every morning. You live for free on a luxury cruise line and have friends from all over the world. You have the opportunity and privilege to work with world class original artwork from some of the world’s greatest living artists and even some of art history’s greatest masters. The first time you ever pick up a 300+ year old Rembrandt your heart races; then it races even more when it sells to an excited client. You work with fun and happy guests who are on vacation and you can educate them and enrich their lives. You are part of a very strong team made up of top of their game outgoing go-getters who are wonderful to work with and call your friends.

Working with Park West is the best move I have ever made in my life, and I cannot wait to see what the next 5 years have in store for me, because somehow it just keeps getting better."

Exhibit Features Matisse and Rodin

Henri Matisse is an artist of classical greatness and one of the strongest influences on the art of the 20th century. The Park West Gallery Collection is one of the world's finest, showcasing fine art by masters including Henri Matisse. Browse the Park West Gallery - Matisse Collection >>

Henri Matisse. Nu bleu IV, 1952. © succession H. Matisse - Photo : Ville de Nice - Service PhotographiquePARIS -- The Rodin Museum is staging a face-to-face encounter between two outstanding creative artists who were only a generation apart, Henri Matisse and Auguste Rodin. Rodin was the dominant figure in the sculpture of the period while Matisse, Rodin's contemporary for the first seventeen years of the 20th century, introduced revolutionary changes in its painting. The story of the encounters and relations between these two major artists is one that has remained unexplored until now.

When the two artists met for the first time, in 1899, Matisse was thirty years old and Rodin sixty. Matisse & Rodin will put forward some fresh thinking on what Matisse, the master of Fauvism, made of Rodin, on what his works can tell us about the affinities, correspondences or differences between the two artists.

On show to the public will be a wide-ranging selection of Matisse's sculpture, an aspect of his work to which no specific exhibition has been devoted since 1975. By selecting certain specific works and using a thematic approach, Matisse & Rodin sets out to show both points of convergence and divergence in the sculptural and graphic work of the two masters. It aims to explore Matisse's sculpture and drawings and, from the perspective of Matisse's art, to see Rodin in a new light.

Matisse & Rodin is now on view through February 28, 2010.

We received the painting this week and wanted to send along our thanks. We are really pleased with the piece - the colors are great and you certainly personalized it for us! Thanks for the dedication on the back - it makes it even more special. The entire piece is a great reminder of the wonderful time we had in Santa Fe.

We look forward to seeing you again sometime in the future.
