Carnavale II. Peter Nixon.I recently had the pleasure of meeting two of your employees Allison and Shyam. I met them on the Jewel of the Seas in May. I must say that Allison is a ball of fire so knowledgeable, caring and helpful she truly can be in two places in one. Shy is also such a treasure. They made my cruise. To the point that I would book another cruise knowing that they would be there.

Over the years I have purchased a great deal of art on cruises, land auctions and directly from artists and galleries. I have also worked closely with Mike (art consultant) and been well satisfied. Your organization should be very proud of the way they represent your business. Job well done!!

Art Auctioneer Enjoys Working with Park West

The Art Auctioneers maintaining the Park West Galleries on cruise ships around the world lead extraordinary lives. While they do work hard running Park West’s Cruise Art Auctions, they also get to explore all of the exotic locations they find themselves in – all while meeting some fantastic people along the way.

We hope you enjoy getting a glimpse into their activities as much as we do. We also love hearing about your experiences with Park West at sea, so please feel free to share them with us.
__________________________

"Without question one of the best career decisions I ever made was to work with Park West as an Art Auctioneer. I am an American and I was raised in Mission Viejo, California. When I was young I never got to travel further than Arizona. Everyone dreams of having that great jet-setting job traveling the world earning tons of money. When I finally decided to become an Art Auctioneer on a cruise ship I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was scared because I knew very little about art; actually all I knew for sure was that this job was like nothing else I had ever encountered.

The training shore side was intense, and the first four months on the job was a blur. As an Associate Art Auctioneer it was all about hard work and dedication, and you are constantly learning new things. Everything you do is preparation for the final phase: to become a Principal Art Auctioneer on your own cruise ship.

Needless to say at some point pretty early on in the job I found myself typing away on Facebook on a Tuesday during a day off in port. One of my old friends was chatting with me while on a break in their cubicle at their 9-5 job. They asked me where I was, what I was doing, and what this new job was that I had gotten myself into. I told them that I was on Cozumel Island in Mexico at a beach resort. I was lounging by a pool drinking cheap Coronas at No Name Bar (trust me, you will love it when you get there) after spending the morning SCUBA diving on some of the world’s best reefs. My new girlfriend from Sweden was sitting next to me and she was chatting with other shipboard friends from England and South Africa and Romania and Thailand. I was an art auctioneer / art dealer representing the world’s largest art dealer and I live and work on cruise ships all over the world.

My friend of course quickly replied “lol – what are you really doing.” I think it was at that point that it hit me. I had found that dream job.

Working with Park West takes a lot of determination, hard work, creativity, people skills and a can do attitude. There are plenty of easy and fun days when the ship is in port and plenty of long hard days when the ship is at sea. The work is hard but the rewards are huge. This is not a 9-5 office job – you wake up in a new country every morning. You live for free on a luxury cruise line and have friends from all over the world. You have the opportunity and privilege to work with world class original artwork from some of the world’s greatest living artists and even some of art history’s greatest masters. The first time you ever pick up a 300+ year old Rembrandt your heart races; then it races even more when it sells to an excited client. You work with fun and happy guests who are on vacation and you can educate them and enrich their lives. You are part of a very strong team made up of top of their game outgoing go-getters who are wonderful to work with and call your friends.

Working with Park West is the best move I have ever made in my life, and I cannot wait to see what the next 5 years have in store for me, because somehow it just keeps getting better."

Park West Judges the American Art Awards

American Art Awards
SOUTHFIELD, MI, July 13, 2009 (PR Urgent) -- Park West Gallery is honored to participate in the judging of the 2009 American Art Awards. The panel of judges responsible for reviewing all of the submitted artwork consists of representatives from twenty-five of the country's most prestigious galleries. Park West Gallery was selected to represent the state of Michigan.

"It's great to be able to view work by up and coming artists and have the opportunity to help them gain exposure," said Morris Shapiro, Park West's Gallery Director of 26 years. "We're in a wonderful time in the evolution of the art world. There are so many gifted artists at work, and most of them are sensing the 'pendulum' moving back toward aesthetic beauty and artistic rigorousness and away from the novel, sensational and conceptual 'art' that preoccupies so much of our world today. I'm really looking forward to seeing what's out there."

The American Art Awards, hosted by artist and actor Thom Bierdz, provides fifty categories for artists to enter their works into; a 'Best in Show' will be selected in addition to winners from each category. Submissions are due by July 31, 2009, and the winners will be announced sometime in August. The exposure for winning artists will be substantial given that the complete results of the 2009 American Art Awards will be distributed to over 30,000 galleries, collectors and artists; the winning artists' information along with their artwork will also be displayed on the American Art Awards website for an entire year.

For more information on the American Art Awards and submission guidelines, visit http://www.americanartawards.com/.

Customer Corner: Thanks Park West Gallery!

I just wanted to thank you for the opportunity to attend our first VIP event. We had such a wonderful time learning about art, talking to the guest artists and their families and meeting fellow art lovers.

The Park West staff, Chris Lindsay, Sam, Rebecca and Daniel (PW ship staff) were great. Chris is so knowledgeable, he is a walking-talking book on art. Please extend our gratitude to everyone involved for all their hard work in planning and executing this event and for making this so memorable for us.

Best Regards,

Alan and Sharon W.

Park West Artists at Sea: Fanch Ledan

Volets Caraibes by Fanch Ledan

Artists are hanging up their brushes and testing their sea legs to launch a program intended to enhance the Celebrity guest’s cruising experience.

By Cassandra,
Cruise Ship Art Auctioneer

Fanch Ledan boarded the Celebrity Constellation with the intention to initiate as much involvement with the guests as possible. His charming French demeanor and his readiness to greet guests assured a sensational first night onboard. Even if they were not previously involved in art, their chance to meet the world renowned artist quickly sparked their interest.

The next day was a live interview with the cruise director. The vision of the artist was discussed and the floor was opened for questions and answers. The intimate crowd was quite enthused to have personal insight to the artist’s world and was eager to hear more.

After the interview came the first auction. A live art auction is always a guaranteed crowd pleaser. When one of the artists is present to comment on his works it becomes a truly electrifying event . Mr. Ledan would humbly inform the crowd of the inspiration and significance behind each work of art -- information that even the most knowledgeable art dealer might be unable to provide. His words narrated a story behind each work and embedded emotional ties into the crowd. Many of these guests soon became Fanch Ledan art collectors.

Over many dinner discussions, the word spread fast throughout the ship that there was a special artist onboard. The gossip was that he was fun, friendly and most of all, approachable. Many guests commented on his amicability and his willingness to discuss his many experiences as an artist. The art gallery was busy for the next few days; mainly with signatures, photo shoots and lengthy conversations.

The second auction was an even bigger hit than the first. By that time, the whole ship had access to the live interview with Fanch, which had been broadcast into all the staterooms during the port days. The artist sailing was the buzz on the ship -- everyone wanted to come and check out the world renowned artist that Park West Gallery had brought to them.

Park West Gallery prides itself on creating a comfortable and informal environment for people to collect fine art. They understand that art collecting has a veneer of elitism and they succeed in actively demolishing that perception. Bringing art to the people is their mission. Bringing the artist that created the art to the people is even more poignant. Celebrity guests, quickly turned art connoisseurs, had a cruise experience of a lifetime. Many of them will forever own a fine work of art that they will be able to enjoy for the rest of their lives. It will always remind them of the great relationships that were built with the artist and the art dealers while they sailed the seas on the Celebrity Constellation.

Park West Gallery Director Morris Shapiro Featured in Detroit Jewish News

Article & Images courtesy of The Detroit Jewish News Online

PLATINUM: Decor - Art & Soul
Peek inside the personal collection of Park West Gallery’s director.

WRITTEN BY KHRISTI ZIMMETH
PHOTOGRAPHS BY GENE MEADOWS

Park West Gallery, Morris ShapiroA large work by Marc Chagall hangs in the front hall of Morris and MaryAnn Shapiro's Novi home.

"It's definitely one of my favorites," the 56-year-old Park West Gallery director says of Le Mariage, a 1976 aquatint framed in black that depicts a traditional Jewish wedding. "We bought it for each other as a wedding gift."

A tour of the Shapiros' contemporary home reveals more than 100 other works, all with personal meaning. Hanging over the living-room sofa is a large contemporary piece by Miro; and nearby, the small gold-framed Portrait of Jan Lutman the Goldsmith is by Rembrandt. In the family room, a large piece by Detroit artist Marcus Glenn hangs over the fireplace. Other walls hold a Matisse-like drawing, works by 1998 World Cup artist Linda LeKinff and mysterious and otherworldly images by New York artist Robert Kipniss. Many share Shapiro's Jewish heritage.

"I don't have a traditional art collection, per se," he explains. "I'm immersed in art. My collection is eclectic and based on personal experiences and relationships with artists. Each means something special to me."

Working with Southfield's 63,000-square-foot Park West Gallery has enabled Shapiro to meet many of the artists whose work now hangs in the home he shares with MaryAnn and 14-year-old daughter Amanda. Three other children - Mia, Myles and Mason - are grown. A family portrait by artist Peter Max hangs over the living room's grand piano, and a tour of his collection is sprinkled with stories and reminiscences of artists he has been fortunate enough to meet and work with.

Park West Gallery, Morris ShapiroWorking directly with artists is one of the best parts of the job, he says, and a dream since he was a child. Shapiro grew up in Chicago in the 1950s and '60s. His mother, he says, decorated the house with gaudy French Provincial furniture and accessories. "It was really hideous," he remembers. "There was no art on the walls, so I made my own. I drew and painted in part to rebel against my parents."

Thumbing through a book on the Holy Land one day in his parents' library, he came across a woodcut of Adam and Eve by Albrecht Durer. "I was mesmerized by the contours and lines and Durer's use of space," he says. "From that moment on, I was smitten.

"He eventually followed Durer into drawing, going on to study at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. While there, he shifted his emphasis from studio art to art history and art criticism, later working at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts before returning to the Windy City to pursue another passion - music.

After playing the drums professionally for a time, Shapiro took a position as gallery director for Chicago's Merrill Chase Galleries, where he worked from 1977-1983. In 1983, he came to Detroit to head Park West's retail gallery, where he's been ever since.

After 25 years, he's still passionate about the company's philosophy of bringing art to the public.

"In many ways, art has been taken away from the people and made less accessible," he says. "It's gratifying to be able to swing the pendulum back and to allow people to experience art firsthand."

While Shapiro is serious about his art, not all of his art is serious. Another favorite piece in his collection is a drawing by animator Chuck Jones, dedicated to daughter Amanda. "It was really neat to meet him," Shapiro says.

While eclectic, Shapiro says his collection reflects his interests and his life. He's passionate about reading, writing and music and loves to travel. He participates in jazz jam sessions whenever possible and is currently collaborating with Amanda, a burgeoning singer-songwriter, on her first demo recording. He enjoys spending time with his first grandchild, Matthew.

A member of Temple Shir Shalom in West Bloomfield, Shapiro also is passionate about his family and his faith. He believes it "is about being appreciative of the blessings I have in life, the sanctity of family, the observance of and passing on of tradition," he says. "My religion also provides for me a perspective of how short life is, how miniscule and insignificant we are, how God's creations are miraculous and infinite and how fortunate [we are] for every day we are given. Each day is a gift of inestimable value."

He believes others interested in collecting art should follow the same philosophy, allowing art to enhance their life, not just their wallets.

"Knowing what you like is the entrance into the art world," he says. "People should buy art because they love it. It should be collected for its emotional and spiritual benefits, not its financial benefits. It's really the only way to go." Read More

Park West Gallery CEO Offers Expert Tips on Art Collecting

Albert Scaglione, Park West Gallery
Albert Scaglione, CEO of Park West Gallery, is featured in the Spring 2009 issue of Centralight: Central Michigan University Alumni Magazine. In the article entitled Art for All: Gallery Owner Spreads Joy of Appreciation, writer Barbara Sutherland Chovanec spoke to Scaglione about his mission to "make art accessible to everyone" and got his 5 Expert Tips for art collectors.

Scaglione explained, "It's invigorating - the idea that we can get more people exposed to art. Our business model has been to get the art to the people. We very much love to be the people who teach you and introduce you to art."

To help achieve his goal, the founder of Park West Gallery donates significant gifts of artwork to various institutions and universities, including Central Michigan, in order to create what Scaglione calls "living museums."

How to Buy Fine Art: Albert Scaglione, founder and owner of Park West Gallery, offers 5 Expert Tips to help collectors have a positive art-buying experience:
  1. Let your own taste drive you. Buy what you like, not what someone else says you should like.
  2. Do your research. Find out about the artist, if the price seems logical, whether or not there have been previous owners and where the art has been displayed.
  3. Know who you're dealing with - the artist or the company. Be sure the people who are selling your art to you know what they're talking about.
  4. Consider an appraiser. They have the resources to do research for you.
  5. Enjoy your choice. You should experience joy - an uplifting feeling.

Comments from a Park West Gallery VIP Customer

On Friday, Feb 27 Park West Gallery received a fantastic comment from one of our VIP customers on our Customer Corner blog posting. The message was so heartfelt and appreciated that we are reposting it in full as follows. Thank you Patrick & Diane!

"To whom it may concern,

My wife and I recently returned from our first VIP Cruise/auction at sea on the Carnival Miracle out of Port Everglades on 2 /1–9 /09. We have to admit, when Samantha first contacted us, we were very skeptical about the invitation. We had been to a VIP land auction at your Miami Lakes Gallery before but this invitation was very different with its offer of an 8-day cruise. After many question filled e-mails and phone calls to Samantha (sorry about that), we accepted the invitation.

Of course our first thought was of our past “time share” sales horror experiences. Boy were we ever wrong in thinking that. We ended up having the time of our lives meeting other people who shared our love for art and cruising to exotic places. But I think most of all we enjoyed the company of your fine Park West staff, seeing works of art we had never seen before, and meeting the special artists who sailed with us.

Getting to meet Simon Bull, Dominic Pangborn and Tim Rogerson was one of the coolest and most special things that we have ever experienced. Not only did we get to see some of their fantastic works of art but also we got to talk with them, hang out around the ship with them and watch them paint. What a thrill for all in attendance.

You don’t usually get to speak with an artist and find out what goes through their minds when they paint or what inspired them to create the beautiful works of art we got to see. Too many times, all we know about an artist is what we read in an art books or hear about in secondhand stories. Oh to have been given the opportunity such as this to speak with the likes of Rembrandt, Picasso, Mouly, Miro or Dali in such a fashion when they were alive. Each of our artists was very different in their approach to creating art but they all had the love of creating and appreciating it in common. That was the common thread for all of us in attendance. Truly an amazing experience.

We would especially like to thank our wonderful hosts for the trip as well. Chris Lindsay, Samantha, Katherine and Rebecca went out of their way each day to make sure all of our needs were taken care of. Each of them had their own insight and knowledge regarding different art and artists and were always available to answer any of our questions. It was a difficult task to keep track of our group as we all had different needs and questions. They all handled a very stressful situation in a calm and professional manner. But the most important part of the whole experience was the fun factor, which was met every single day.

This was our second but most in-depth time spent with Chris. We were lightly exposed to his wit and knowledge at the Miami Lakes event. From the very first meet and greet at the hotel before the cruise, we knew we were in for a treat. Chris has the ability to make you think, ask questions, look at art and artists differently then you thought possible and most importantly, enable you to have a good time. Who could have guessed you could find Homer Simpson in a Tarkay original. If you haven’t seen Chris’s demonstration, ask him to show you.

It was very refreshing to see the Park West group during off hours (if they had any) around the ship as well. There was no talk of art (unless you wanted to) but pleasant, get to know you conversations and talk of other topics and experiences. We went from strangers to friends in a short period of time.

Learning can be fun if you listen and ask questions. Our Guru Art Guide, Chris, was more masterful than mystical in opening our eyes to appreciate the art world around us. The array of different art brought on board for the VIP auction was outstanding. We knew most of the artists but had never seen or knew of the existence of many of the works. For the first time we realized we were now collectors and not just buyers of art.

Again, Chris and his staff were there to answer any of our questions during the auctions. They all had the ability to advise us and guide us in our choice of art to collect. What was most satisfying to us was to hear all of them remind us many times to “collect artwork you like”. That is the key to the whole thing for us.

Our tastes are all over the spectrum as far as styles and artists. Attending the evening lectures on different artists’, styles, techniques and history really changed our opinion on art we would never have thought of adding to our collection. We have come to learn from past “regular” auctions to have open minds and not go with a shopping list of things we “need” to get at your events.

Over the years of buying art, we don’t think there is an item in our house we haven’t enjoyed looking at each day. It’s a pleasure to hear that philosophy being presented to us by your company even at the VIP level. We have decided it’s time to take our art collection to new levels so we will be exchanging some of our older art so we can add to our gallery of new fine art works. We hope they will find good homes and be with people who can take the same journey as we are on.

We are excited to receive our new artwork in the coming months. Again we thank Park West, Chris, Samantha, Katherine, Rebecca and everyone else we didn’t meet who helped make this a wonderful and memorable trip.

Respectfully,

Patrick & Diane Abad
Plantation, Fl. 33313

Dear Park West Gallery Newsletter Editors

The Park West Gallery Newsletter staff is so appreciative of all of the thoughtful words we receive from our readers. Here are just a few of the kind responses and we look forward to publishing even more in upcoming issues!

"Meeting all the artists at the 40th Anniversary Event in Detroit was so exciting. Meeting, socializing and hearing each artist explain what motivates them to paint has given us the desire to collect additional art from artists we had previously not noticed. Our favorites have been the ones we naturally were drawn to at each showing, but now, we will enlarge our art collection with new artist. Park West Gallery was such an exciting place to be and meet and greet with so many wonderful people who love art. We made new friends of other art lovers and artists. Thank you for this enriching experience. A memorable moment for us was the night Albert and his wife sat at our table and gave us details of their work with the Girls Home. How wonderful they help with the blessings that God has provided with others in need. We love the newsletter! It is great to be advised of up to date happenings with Park West Gallery." Charles & Dutchie W. ~ Sherwood, Arizona

"Thank you very much for the newsletter. We purchased 7 Rembrandt etchings on one of our cruises and a Tarkay painting. I am so happy with them and am ready to start looking again. You have a great gallery and wonderful paintings. Jordon and his staff were outstanding. Looking forward to doing business with you again." Eldon & Jeanne B. ~ Blue Earth, Minnesota

"Thank you for the newsletter. We have many pieces of art acquired from Park West Gallery via various cruise lines and our house is full of a variety of styles and images which totally intrigue our neighbors, friends and family." Gloria & Mike S. ~ Kelowna, B.C. Canada

"I have bought at least a dozen [Park West] pieces for my home and office. Each one has a personal connection with an event or stage in my life. For example, after returning from seeing Chagall's painting atop the Paris Opera House, I bought the same theme in Le Dance. Right now, I am looking at Chagall's lithograph of a female figure overlooking a Village. I got it at auction right after my mom passed and it reminds me of her presence and caring every day at work." Chas C. ~ Bethesda, Maryland

"I just received your newsletter and couldn't stop reading. We are great admirers of Park West Gallery's people as well as the beautiful and unique art pieces you offer. The greatest part of being part of the 'Park West Family' is meeting the artists, and if lucky, learning more about THEIR PASSION in their craft. Thank you for the experiences we have been able to share." Kenn & Marie B. ~ Camas, Washington

"Thank you for this great [newsletter]. My wife and I have purchased a few pieces of work from Park West and have never been disappointed." Larry N. ~ Chanute, Kansas

"Thank you for the newsletter. It is another way for those who bought artwork to keep informed and to continue to be educated by those who really know and understand the present world of art. My wife and I continue to enjoy our artwork we have accumulated over the years, mostly from Park West." Kurt & Wilma P. ~ Denver, North Carolina

Winnie the Pooh and Park West Too!

Winnie the Pooh

On this day, October 14, A.A. Milne's famed children's story Winnie-the-Pooh was published for the first time in 1926.

The adventures of cute, cuddly Pooh bear and his friends - Christopher Robin, Eeyore, Rabbit, Kanga, Roo, Tigger, and Piglet - are still enjoyed today by young and old.

With Sweetest Day just around the corner (Saturday, October 18), collect something special for your "Hunny" like a limited-edition Pooh and friends etching or production cel.
