Remodel Includes Displaying Park West Artwork

We believe that the real joy of collecting works from the Park West Gallery Art Collection begins when you get them home. The next time you find yourself cruising with Park West at sea, be sure to check out the cruise art auctions so you can find artwork to display around your home.

Hi Park West Gallery:

John and I thought you might like to see our "new Family Room." We recently redecorated in order to better show off all the Cartoon art that we purchased on cruises, especially our Willardson's!

Park West Artwork Displayed in Living Room
I'm not much of a photographer, and we are still waiting for the fireplace doors to come in, but I think you get the idea. I think Mr. Willardson would be pleased! We call it the Happy Room!

Thanks for offering us such great experiences each time we cruise! We now have so much art we don't have the room to hang it all.

Park West Hosts Benefit for Michigan’s Children

The Park West Foundation supports numerous organizations committed to strengthening positive values and leadership in communities around the world. The Foundation also hosts events for many charitable organizations each year, generating significant proceeds for many worthy causes.

Nolan Ross. Punch. 1977. Park West GalleryExhibit honors artist who had talent -- and a disease
NEAL RUBIN • THE DETROIT NEWS
September 24, 2009

I only knew Nolan Ross when he was strange. I missed the part where he was just slightly peculiar -- and I had no idea how good he once was.

I feel bad about that. About flinching when he'd stop near my desk, mumble something and stare blankly at a spot on the wall above my head for an increasingly uncomfortable five minutes. About wondering why we'd hired this stiff who couldn't even draw a caricature of a tiger, for heaven's sake.

So maybe I'm making amends by telling everyone about the showing of his work October 3 at Park West Gallery in Southfield, a benefit for Michigan's Children. Or maybe I'm just impressed by the persistence of his brother, Carter, who's been trying for decades to hang Nolan's drawings where everyone can see them.

Mostly, though, I'm astonished at the art.

Nolan Ross was an illustrator at the other paper in the '70s and '80s. Quiet by nature, he was largely overshadowed by some of the big names there and by people like the late cartoonist Draper Hill here at The Detroit News. In Ross' obituary in 1997, a former editor described his work as "marvelously precise and truly daft," which might also have described the artist.

"He was incredibly talented and odd," says Jack Kresnak, a former reporter who's now the president of Michigan's Children. "It would take him a few moments to respond to your question or your statement, and it would come back to you in a slightly skewed way -- not mean or unkind, because he was truly gentle and kind-hearted, but not quite on center."

Nolan Ross. The Conductor. 1977. Park West GalleryGetting his due
That was during the good times, when he was just another mild eccentric in a newsroom thick with them. By the mid-'80s, though no one knew it, he was beset with Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, a genetic brain disorder often taken for Alzheimer's.

His dad died of it, too. Arthur Ross was a legendary GM designer whose kids graduated from Mumford High. Nolan, 54, and a resident of Livonia when he died, went on to what's now the College for Creative Studies. Carter, 69, became a mechanical engineer in Chicago.

Carter always felt his younger brother was unappreciated. As for whether his sketches are well-enough remembered to draw a crowd, "I'm as curious as anybody else could be," he says.

Ross has spent two full-tilt months at a computer, restoring Nolan's originals to look more like art than like newspaper illustrations dotted with dates, coding and instructions. He'll mount 60 of them at Park West and put 300 on slides to be projected against a wall: wine-quaffing dragons, superhero asparagus stalks, caricatures, cars, collages.

"We're just trying to give a shout-out to a man who did great work and had a sad ending," Kresnak says -- someone whose work still speaks eloquently, long after he couldn't.

Art Auctioneers Make Cruise Memorable

We love to hear about all of the exception service Park West customers receive from the Art Auctioneers during their cruise art auctions!

Park West Galleries can be found on a variety of cruise ships, and they offer passengers a unique opportunity to view and collect artworks from a multitude of artists. Next time you find yourself cruising, check out the Park West Gallery Collection of artwork onboard.

Csaba Markus. Acropolis Urania.
"The Art Gallery staff on the Norwegian Gem was outstanding. I have been to several art auctions in the past and was always satisfied with the service I got but this time they went above what was necessary to do their job. They were really informative and made you feel like you were making a purchase from an old friend.

This was the first time my husband had been to an art auction and he was quite skeptical in the beginning. They not only won him over but he made several purchases on his own. I would really like to thank them for making our cruise one to remember."

Sincerely,

Exhibit: Renoir in the 20th Century

Pierre-Auguste Renoir is easily the most popular painter of the Impressionist movement. The colorful landscapes of his early years and the idealized nudes of his later years are equal in their appeal and their luminous, spontaneous qualities. The Park West Gallery masterworks collection is one of the world’s finest, showcasing artwork by artists including Renoir. View the Park West collection >>

Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Grand Palais. REUTERS/Gareth Watkins
PARIS, FRANCE — Renoir in the 20th Century, showing at the Grand Palais, includes some paintings, drawings and sculptures that are little known to the public. The exhibit in Paris showcases artwork from the second half of Auguste Renoir's career, when he changed course in his 40s to experiment with a more classical style.

In the 1880s, Renoir moved from the Impressionist school, best-known for sunlight-filled landscapes painted outdoors, to concentrate on female nudes and portraits. Renoir never wanted to reject Impressionism, but instead strove for a more decorative and traditional style.

His three sons, wife and family friends figure among the figures painted. Among the works is a bust of his son, from a private collection, being publicly displayed for the first time. The exhibit also includes works by other artists from the beginning of the 20th century, such as Picasso, Matisse, Maillol and Bonnard, to show Renoir's influence on painters who followed the Impressionists. One room contains photos of Renoir throughout his life, in his Paris apartment and in the countryside, with his family and friends.

Renoir in the 20th Century is currently on view until January 4, 2010.

Cruise Ship Art Auctioneers strive to make cruising with Park West at sea an enjoyable, exciting experience for all. It is always wonderful to hear about someone’s first experiences with the Park West Gallery Fine Art Collection – and of course we love hearing from our seasoned collectors as well!

A Dance at the Gallery. Marcus Glenn.Art Auctioneer Catherine turned my nephew onto artwork. He left the cruise ship with 3 pieces of small artwork, which was all he could afford at the time.

Both, he and I, loved the work of MARCUS GLENN, even though we just could not afford anything at the time that his work was on display.

Catherine was informative and attentive to my nephew's curiosity. We hope to make future purchases thru Park West when we go on our next cruise.

Thank you,

A Weekend with Park West Artists…

Dear Park West Gallery:

Richard and I had a fantastic time in Dallas at the Park West weekend event with Marcus Glenn and Leslie Lew. Although we have been collecting art for several years at cruise ship auctions, art festivals and a couple of Park West land auctions, this was our 1st weekend event. We loved it!

Pablo Picasso(after). Imaginary Portrait.Your team worked so well together; we arrived late Friday evening and everything flowed seamlessly for the rest of the weekend. We had not purchased a "master" work from PW previously, and although we found one we really liked (a Picasso Imaginary Portrait), we were very anxious about making that "leap".

The Art Team spent a lot of time with us, educating us and helping us to feel comfortable with our options and our decision. We also purchased originals from Glenn, Gockel and Ilyayev and many members of the team spent time with us, readily available to answer questions. We did not feel pressure from anyone, which was crucial for us, as we respond very negatively to "pushy" or aggressive salespeople and, had we felt pressured, we most likely would not have purchased anything at all. We appreciate the patience demonstrated to us.

Richard and I have been attending auctions since the early 90s. Early in our marriage we went to bank foreclosure auctions in Houston almost every weekend for entertainment (we didn't have any money to buy anything; we just watched and had fun). We have been to over a hundred auctions.

Chris Lindsay was the most entertaining auctioneer we have ever encountered! We had a blast! Not only did he have us laughing for 3 straight days, the rest of the crew (Rebecca, Sam, Tiffany, Ashlee, David, Jason and Simon-{and I hope I didn't leave anyone out, because all who were there participated!}) were fantastic straight men and fall guys for Chris's antics, and it wouldn't have worked nearly as well without them.

Slava Ilyayev. She Will be Loved.Marcus Glenn was also great fun, especially during Saturday night's dueling pianos. He was a good sport and was as much fun as we had expected he would be. (How can someone create art like that and not be a lot of fun!) The highlight of Saturday evening was an impromptu a cappella performance by Tiffany. She was fantastic, and although it didn't really fit into the venue (the pianists went straight into Queen after her Phantom!), as a classical music lover, I loved it! (loved the Queen as well)

We think that your group has a great chemistry, and without it the weekend would not have been as much fun. There was a great balance between the serious educational stuff (critical when you are thinking about spending a small fortune and making a big leap in your art collecting) and the cutting up and having fun to release the tension of spending all that money! Your team has got the balance down to an art, and they made it easy and fun to spend our money!!! We think that you should keep this team together, and we hope that you will include us in a future event hosted by this same team.

We sincerely thank you for including us,

Laura & Richard R.
Fort Worth, TX

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — The San Diego Museum of Art presents Picasso, Miró, Calder, an exhibition showcasing nearly 50 works by three of the greatest 20th century artists. The exhibition highlights loans from private collections and a number of recent and promised gifts to the Museum including a major oil painting by Pablo Picasso, Femme assise, 1949; an untitled drawing by Picasso, 1971; the Joan Miró painting, Femme, oiseaux, constellations, 1974; as well as a number of prints by both Picasso and Miró.

The exhibit also includes a diverse selection of works on paper including prints, drawings and paintings rarely on display due to the light-sensitive nature of these works. Cézanne and American Modernism

Paul Cézanne once said, "I want to make of Impressionism something solid and lasting like the art in museums." Cézanne was a highly influential figure in 20th century art, a pioneer in the Post-Impressionist movement and inspiration for the Cubist movement; his legacy in the art world remains firmly in place to this day. Discover more about Paul Cézanne and your favorite artists at Park West Gallery biography pages >>

Paul Cézanne. Mont Sainte-Victoire Seen from the Bibemus Quarry. c. 1897.
MONTCLAIR, NEW JERSEY — The Montclair Art Museum (MAM) presents Cézanne and American Modernism, the first exhibition to examine fully the influence of Paul Cézanne (1839–1906) upon modern American artists from 1907 to 1930. The exhibition will explore the critical function American artists and others played in establishing the reputation of Cézanne, who has been universally acclaimed as the definitive bridge between late 19th-century Impressionism and the modern art movements of the 20th century.

As the largest, most ambitious exhibition in the 95-year history of the Museum, Cézanne and American Modernism comprises 131 works, including 18 works by Cézanne and paintings, works on paper, photographs, and archival documents representing 34 American artists, as well as critics.

Cézanne and American Modernism is currently on view through January 3, 2010.

Walt Disney’s Destino and Salvador Dali

"DEAR PARK WEST GALLERY CUSTOMER: My name is Michael Young and I am the CEO of Collectors Editions, the company which holds the exclusive licensing rights for the Salvador Dali - Walt Disney collaboration, Destino.

Park West Gallery is an agent for the artwork published by Collectors Editions from the Dali - Disney Destino project. We are very pleased with their professionalism and reputation and very much enjoy our mutual business relationship.

The Destino project itself is quite interesting and historically unique. It is really the only true example of animated Salvador Dali art in film.

Salvador Dali and Walt DisneyWhen Dali was living in California during the 1940’s he met Walt Disney at the home of Jack Warner and they decided based on their mutual respect for each other’s work to collaborate.

Dali considered Disney to be one of America’s great surrealist artists. They chose a Mexican love ballad as the theme and for many months at the Disney studios, Dali created drawings, paintings and storyboards for the project. For various reasons the project was never completed and the original art was left in the Disney vaults.

In 1999, Roy E. Disney, nephew of Walt, remembered the existence of the art and with his team reprised the project. The film was screened throughout the world, won numerous awards and the artwork has just completed a world museum tour where it appeared in the exhibition, Dali and Cinema.

Salvador Dali. Walt Disney. Destino #74. Park West Gallery. The Destino artworks published by Collectors Editions are of the highest quality graphic fine art works and have included various media: etchings, lithographs and serigraphs - all from Dali’s originals. The works are subjected to the highest scrutiny of artistic quality and are created in strictly limited editions.

We have observed increasing demand for the works over time and consider them highly collectable examples of one of the 20th Century’s most interesting artistic collaborations.

Congratulations on acquiring your works from Destino, and I wish you many years of enjoyment."

Michael Young
President,
Collectors Editions

Whether you’ve started your own Park West art collection, or just decided to check out the art auctions briefly, we appreciate any feedback you provide.

"We think it noteworthy to let you know that we were cruising on a Carnival vessel from 9/3 through 9/7/09. We have sailed on many cruises on many different vessels where you are represented and found both art auctioneer Shawn and Justin to be the best we have encountered thus far.

Shawn was extremely professional as well as being such a crowd-pleaser. And Justin was a delight. Comments overheard by us at the auctions were so favorable and especially from repeat guests.

We have purchased art from you on prior cruises and were not inclined this time although friends did. I am sure you hear your share of complaints and just want you to hear the "raves" as well.

What a delight this duo is!!!"

Park West Cruise Art Auctions are First Class

Dear Park West Gallery:

Seashore Pier #1. Itzchak Tarkay. Please accept our grateful appreciation for including us on your VIP Cruise to Alaska on the Rhapsody of the Seas the week of July 24-31!

This was our first event with Park West and we were very impressed by how professional, courteous and accommodating Morris, Sa’Belle, Jin, Kathleen and Tom were. It was truly a pleasure to be included and we appreciate the fact that there was no high pressure sales tactics at any time. The complete event and the Park West team were first class the entire week!

The group on the cruise was phenomenal and the auctions were very informative. The works of both Hua Chen and Leslie Lew were outstanding and we enjoyed meeting them and learning about them. Unfortunately, neither was our style, but we are privileged to add 2 more fabulous artists to our knowledge base! We are also privileged to have developed some wonderful friendships!

We thank you again for an outstanding event and are looking forward to receiving and enjoying our Tarkay originals to add to our Park West collection!

With Warmest Regards,

Artwork and Artists Make Park West Event Special

We are ever so thankful for your providing us the opportunity to stay at the Biltmore during the VIP event to see what it really is like. As you know, we have been there for your dinner/auction events, but never stayed overnight. It was a real treat! All events were fun and we met some really wonderful people, plus the artists, Dominic Pangborn and Simon Bull.

Amore by NoahLord knows there was plenty of good food and drink. The "Dueling Pianos" was a fun event and something we had never experienced before. There were people of all ages and backgrounds. All of the children attending were wonderfully behaved or kept busy so as not to get bored and be a bother. The hotel had a "Dive-In" Movie on Friday night at the big pool. We had seen the movie, but it was still neat to see it projected on a big screen over the pool, suspended between the palm trees!

I used my camcorder while the artist, Simon Bull, gave us a demonstration of his painting. He is very entertaining. We met the people who live here in town that bought his demonstration painting and provided them with the footage of his painting. We enjoyed the artwork of the new artists you have added to your collection.

EJ assisted us from the "phone call invitation/set-up," all the way through the final minute before we left the Biltmore. Your Art Auctioneer and all the assistants in front of and behind the scenes were great!

Thanks again for this enjoyable weekend,

Suzanne & Wayne H.
